When your brain knows you’re safe, but the rest of you hasn’t gotten the memo

Trauma doesn’t always stay in the past. It can show up as anxiety, hypervigilance, avoidance, shutdown, difficulty trusting, or feeling like you’re constantly waiting for something to go wrong.

Trauma doesn’t always look like trauma

You don’t have to be having flashbacks or nightmares for past experiences to still be affecting you. Sometimes trauma looks more like constantly scanning for what could go wrong, overthinking conversations, shutting down during conflict, avoiding certain people or situations, struggling to trust, feeling disconnected from yourself, or having a nervous system that seems permanently stuck on high alert.

You may understand logically that you’re safe now, and still find that your body reacts like you’re not. That’s one of the frustrating things about trauma: knowing better doesn’t always mean your nervous system believes it.
